2023 The Manfield Cup
Bowls Northamptonshire have now confirmed the result of this year’s Manfield Cup. A prestigious County wide competition played over many greens with teams from some 25 clubs. After careful checking of all score cards and that all players were affiliated to Bowls Northamptonshire the winning club this year has been announced as Abington with four winning rinks and a score of plus 48 shots. Runner up this year has been confirmed as Thrapston with three winning rinks and a score of plus 32. Congratulations to all our players for achieving a great result for the club. The President’s thanks also go to all those Members who contributed significantly to our club hosting five rinks at Thrapston on the day. David Bailey Club President.

An excerpt from President Dave Bailey’s address at the November 2023 AGM
President/chairman’s annual report Our club has had a positive and successful year. We have a modestly healthy bank balance, a growing membership base, and a small band of willing volunteers and officers who have contributed to much improved facilities, an excellent green, and a strong club reputation throughout the County.
Our success can be viewed in several ways. We were runners up in the Manfield Cup, Adam Pitfield won the Masons Cup and again he represented England as an under 25 International. We also hosted The Middleton Cup matches. We have had an influx of new members which has contributed to the strength of the club. I want to pay a specific thank you to our newer members and their contribution. Your numbers have helped our captains fulfil our fixtures, you have volunteered where you can, and supported our entertainment activities. On the important issue of entertainment, we owe a great deal to the enthusiasm and organisation of Tony and Jen Hetherington. These events strengthen our club and Friday nights would not be the same without them. We successfully brought back our always popular gala day and raised important funds for the club. Our leadership team who organised the gala day did a brilliant job in a short timescale. We will have another gala day in 2024.
This year we see long standing committee members standing down after many years of service to the club. Their commitment and efforts on behalf of the club should be fully recognised. I refer to Mick and Shelagh Galloway. Who have been captains, committee members, willing volunteers and of course Shelagh has also been President of the County Ladies. A role she fulfilled with dignity and great enthusiasm. Richard Horrell has been a long serving committee member, trustee of the club and Competitions Secretary. We also thank Bar Managers Steve and Lin for their efforts and diligence over the last couple of years. On behalf of the club, I thank them all for their contributions.
Looking forward to 2024 we will have a new club shirt and uniform ready for the start of the new season. The Friday night mini league appears to have proved a success and will be organised again towards the end of the season to specifically encourage our newer bowlers. Also watch out for a trial of a new end of season event. A lady’s invitation mixed pairs knock out competition. Designed to encourage more ladies to enter into the spirit of competition. Full details to be given later.
